Values and Beliefs

The mission of Clarkston United Methodist Church is to “Make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”  We believe that this is accomplished locally and globally.  We are a part of The United Methodist Church which is the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States.  From the beginning The United Methodist Church has put a strong emphasis on Christian living, putting faith and love into action.
As United Methodists we believe strongly in the means of grace (works of peity and works of mercy) which are the ways in which we grow closer to God.  Works of piety include prayer, communion, baptism, reading of the scriptures, and fasting.  Works of mercy include visiting the sick, those in prison, feeding the hungry, giving to those in need, and addressing the needs of the poor.
Grace is central to our understanding of God.  Grace is defined as “unmerited favor.”  We believe that there is nothing we do to deserve God’s grace.  United Methodists believe that grace is given to all people.  As Christians we are called to put faith and love into action as a response to God’s freely given grace.
